“In the beginning” is a familiar, often-quoted phrase from the opening verses of Genesis. The opening implies that God has existed and acted in human history long before written records were created. The Old Testament (some call it Hebrew Scripture) was the focus of first century preaching as the first Christians struggled to understand Jesus as the Messiah. Many Old Testament passages continue to show up in Christian teachings and conversations. Some comments about God of the Old Testament and God of the New Testament create tension among believers and non-believers. If you have wanted to study and discuss the books of the Old Testament and their connection to Christianity, this small group is a good place to start. The primary text for this gathering will be Looking at the Old Testament by Stephen Noll. The weekly study will require some preparation and the purchase of materials; copies of Noll’s book will be available for $30. Facilitators: Ed Allen, Dave Dresher, and the Rev. H. Huey Gardner Location: Library Adult Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Course The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is based upon the belief that the youngest children can and do experience God. In the specially prepared environment, the atrium, children and adults use concrete materials to lead them closer to Christ. Spontaneous prayer, song, and silence arise naturally. The Holy Spirit is the true teacher in the atrium, whereas the catechist (adult) is merely a facilitator and fellow Christian along his own spiritual journey. Through the proclamation of scripture, exploration of parables, examination and celebration of liturgical events, the spiritual life of the child is carefully nurtured. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is truly about spiritual formation of those who choose share in its lessons. Facilitator: Beverley Hoyt Location: Room 108 Women of the Bible This class will explore some of the great stories of the Bible through the eyes of the women who participated in them. It should offer lively discussion as we delve into the lives of some extraordinary women. This is not a “gender exclusive” class. ALL are welcome! Facilitator: The Rev. Derrick C. Hill Location: Room 106 Adult Confirmation Class This course will offer the participants insights and an opportunity for conversation about these topics and others. If you are already confirmed, this course will be a great chance to brush up on your church history, the role of Holy Scripture in our tradition, and the Anglican Communion. The Bishop’s annual visit will take place on May 13 at 10:00 am. If you are seeking Confirmation and formal membership in the Episcopal Church, this course is a required starting point. You can also use this course as a starting point for reaffirming your own personal Christian faith. Facilitator: The Rev. Geoffrey P. Evans Location: RMH |
